Made in Scotland, this microscope lens from the 1860s is an early condenser lens, using its convex shape to gather the light from a microscope’s mirror and concentrate it into a cone to illuminate a specimen. Although condenser lenses had been used in microscopes since the seventeenth century, they did not reach modern functionality until the 1870s.
