This formation is a piece of fulgurite, a naturally occurring hollow tube of fused sand and glass formed when lightning of at least 3,270 F° (1,800 C°) strikes and instantaneously melts the silica in sandy ground. Although most fulgurites are only a few inches in length, this much larger one was found by prospectors in northwestern Arizona.
