Although first invented in the late nineteenth century, contact lenses first achieved widespread commercial success in the mid-1930s when plastic began allowing for thinner and softer lenses. Although these contact lenses from the 1940s are made of glass, they operate in the same way as modern-day lenses – by refracting and focusing light onto the retina so that objects appear clearly.
