On Exhibit
This is a body slice from the head to the upper thigh of a female. In this slice, organs have been stained with colored wax to make them readily identifiable. These include the brain, heart, lungs, liver, and intestines.
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Cook County Hospital Anatomy Departments prepared these body slices as teaching tools for medical students in the 1930s and 1940s. The man and woman died of natural causes. Their bodies were frozen, cut into sections, and then preserved in glass containers filled with a formaldehyde solution.
