Made by the Western Electric Company, this electric wall fan from the 1880s is powered by a bipolar electric motor which uses two magnetic fields to generate electricity, while a commutator converts alternating current into direct current. First invented by Schuyler Wheeler (1860 - 1923) in 1886, the earliest electric fans were all powered by DC motors until the production of AC motors in the 1890s.
