This is a miniature model of the refrigerated fruit (mostly bananas) and passenger ship, the Santa Marta. The original boat was part of the United Fruit Company’s “Great White Fleet.” The boats in the fleet were all painted white to reduce the temperature of the bananas by reflecting the tropical sun. Launched into service in 1909, the Santa Marta steamed between the United States, Central and South America, carrying tons of green bananas in refrigerated holds as well as passengers and other cargo.
