The Smith-Premier No. 1, introduced in 1878 by the Smith-Premier Typewriter Company, was one of the earliest successful typewriters and a significant advancement in typewriter design. It was a double-keyboard machine with a unique feature - both uppercase and lowercase letters were typed on separate keyboards, with each key striking the paper from below (upstrike). This typewriter was known for its reliability and the distinctiveness of its visible writing feature, meaning the user could see what was being typed as the keys struck the paper. It became a popular choice for business and personal use and helped lay the foundation for the development of future typewriters.
