This early twin lens camera was created by J. Lancaster & Son, a company established by James Lancaster in 1835 in Birmingham, England. One lens was used to take the picture, and the other functioned as a view finder, allowing the photographer to easily compose the picture. J. Lancaster & Son was originally founded as an optical firm producing glasses, microscopes, and telescopes. The company transitioned to manufacturing wooden view cameras after 1871. By 1898, the company had become one of the world’s prominent camera manufacturers.
