This is a model of a Phoenician merchant ship. The Phoenicians were a trading civilization that flourished between 1550 and 300 BCE in what is today Lebanon and Israel. Due to their location near the water, Phoenician sailors traveled around the coasts of the Mediterranean, Africa, and Western Europe, and usually stayed within sight of land. The hatches on the deck led to a cavernous hold, where cargo such as cedar wood, dyed cloth and jugs of oil or wine could be carried.
