This modern-day brass playpipe from the Elkhart Brass Company is used to connect the end of a fire hose with the nozzle and features a silver metal bail to control the flow of water through the pipe. Invented in the late nineteenth century, the playpipe has evolved from being part of general firefighting equipment to a tool that allows firefighters to measure and compare the pressure of flowing liquid coming out of the hydrants and fire hoses.
