About: Model of ‘Pamir’ Ship
This German square rigged sailing freighter from 1905, is an all-steel barque-rigged ship with power-driven sail-handling gear. Its main cargo role was hauling sodium nitrate (NaNO_3) from mines in Chile and Peru. This naturally occurring mineral was useful in making explosives, fertilizers, food preservatives and smoke bombs before newer methods were invented.
Later used to haul grain from Australia to Britian, Pamir was on a cargo-cadet training voyage when it was lost in Hurrican Carrie in 1957.
