Tango Maru was built in Nagasaki, Japan in 1904 by Mitsubishi. It was called a “three-island ship,” because its forecastle, mid-ship structure and poop deck looked like three islands when viewed from the horizon. This cargo and passenger steamer was a type widely used in the Pacific Ocean in the early 20th century. The tall, angled cranes hoisted break-bulk cargo in giant nets.
